One of my favourite places to take out of town guests.... The Whiteshell

We have guests from out of country. They have visited The Forks, The Journey to Churchill, Gimli, WAG & CMHR. They checked out the Leg, Union Station, Fort Garry Hotel, the underground pathways at Portage & Main and the St. Boniface Cathedral. All great spots when visiting Manitoba.

We decided to take them somewhere different.  We took them on a scenic drive through the Whiteshell with short stops that would have a bit of walking but not too much as the weather was cold and threatening to rain.

Our first stop was Alford Hole Goose Sanctuary. It was disappointing that there was no geese despite it only being the 19th of October. It has just been such a cold fall. It is still a beautiful place to look around and check out. We took a short walk and took pictures along the shores, saw a grouse, and checked out vegetation they wouldn't see back home.

Our next stop was Brereton Lake. We stopped and got hot chocolate at the restaurant and headed out to the Ridge out back. If you have never been out there the best way to go is to take the path to the tennis courts and keep going. You will come to a trail that is marked as part of the Transcanada Trail. I recommend walking along the ridge along the trail as it gets better than just that first viewpoint.

We carried on and decided to take them into Rainbow Falls. I really wanted to stop and take the walk from behind the store to the falls but the rain started so we drove all the way in to the falls. Besides the beauty of the falls and pathways we found some interesting fungus on some of the trees.



We went to Nutimik next. We had to walk in as the campsite bays were closed. Next to yurt #31 there is a path to the beach that we like to take a walk on. When you get to the top of the hill you veer right and are gifted with an awesome Whiteshell view. If you aren't steady on your feet, have a walking stick and be very careful.


There are tons of picture taking opportunities up here and they vary for time of day. We found a nook that was like a little love seat in the rock & fauna for taking pictures! So pretty!



Our last stop just before sunset was just outside The Whiteshell at the Seven Sisters Provincial Park. We got to see the power dam and check out the rapids/falls. There is an outhouse here so a good place to stop before making the trek all the way back to Winnipeg.

This is a favourite road trip of ours but it was made extra special with the addition of our guests that hadn't seen any of these glorious places. Hearing their joy brought us a new appreciate for what we sometimes take for granted. They loved it so much they are hoping to come back and use a Yurt at Nutimik for part of their stay! So exciting!
